Test File Scanning

Test your virus scanner configuration with sample file uploads

Overview

bowbridge includes a built-in file upload test feature that allows administrators to verify the scanning configuration is working correctly.

Accessing the Test Feature

  1. Go to Settings → File Scan
  2. The Test Virus Scanner card appears at the top of the page

Uploading a Test File

  1. Click the file upload area or drag a file into it
  2. The file is scanned and marked as a test file
  3. Expand Show File Scan Logs below to see the scan result

Using the EICAR Test File

The industry-standard way to test antivirus scanning is with the EICAR test file:

  1. Download a test file from eicar.org, or create a text file containing exactly this string:
X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*
  1. Save it as eicar.txt
  2. Upload it using the test file upload feature
  3. The scan should detect it as EICAR-Test-Signature and block/quarantine it

This is a harmless test string, not an actual virus. It is recognized by all major antivirus engines as a test signature.

Test File Count: The Test Virus Scanner card shows the current number of allowed test files in the system. You can delete them by clicking the Delete All Test Files button instead of manually moving them to the Recycle Bin.
